French lithographer, satirist and playwright. First gained notice ca.1825, for his illustrations to La Fontaine's Fables, he became best known for his three series of "Scènes populaires" (1830, 1835, 1862), books of satiric sketches about the people of his day, in which he introduced the characters of Joseph Prudhomme and his wife Gibou. The Prudhommes became an archtype of the typical French bourgeois — good-hearted, but stupid and pretentious, naïve, limited and above all loquacious. Les Bourgeois de Paris (1834) and Mémoires de Monsieur Joseph Prudhomme (1857) combine wit and realism in their presentation of the foibles and pretentions of the middle class. |
