Erotica, and the erotic imagination, has been an abiding interest of many artists - even otherwise quite respectable ones - since at least the Eighteenth Century. JMW Turner, for example, created thousands of images, which were destroyed after his death. Most vintage erotica does not survive, destroyed by incomprehending wives or prudish descendants, but that which does is often astonishing.
